Infusion Therapy

Arthritis, Autoimmune & Allergy offers a several types of infusion options designed to treat a wide range of ailments.  Below is more information on the different types of infusion treatments offered at our facility.

Remicade
Remicade is a TNF inhibitor that is used to treat a wide variety of conditions including Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Psoriasis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. It is administered by IV over a two hour period. The frequency of administration varies from person to person and depends upon their disease and progression. Remicade is a type of protein substance that recognizes, attaches to and blocks the action of a substance in the body called tumor necrosis factor alpha, or TNF-alpha. Too much TNF-alpha can cause the immune system to attack healthy tissue in the body, which then causes inflammation.

Orencia
Orencia is an inhibitor of T-cell activation. It is used to treat Rheumatoid Arthritis. It is administered by IV over a 30 minute period once a month. Orencia works by binding to cells called antigen presenting cells. By binding to the surface of these cells, Orencia prevents them from binding with T-lymphocytes. This action prevents the inflammation reaction from occurring, which in turn reduces inflammation in the joints.

Actemra
Actemra is an IL-6 receptor inhibitor. It is used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It is administered by IV over a one hour period once a month. Actemra works by blocking the action of Interleukin-6, or IL-6, which is a protein in the body believed to plan an important role in the inflammation process that occurs in rheumatoid arthritis.

Cimzia,
Cimzia is a TNF inhibitor used to treat patients with rheumatoid arthritis and crohn’s disease. It is administered by subcutaneous injections once a month. Cimzia works by blocking the production of TNF. This reduces the inflammation in the joints and intestines.

Rituxan
Rituxan is a B-cell depletor used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and vasculitis. For rheumatoid arthritis it is administered by IV over a 3 to 4 hour period at week 0 and 2 and then every six months. For vasculitis patients it is administered by IV over a 2 to 3 hour period once weekly for four weeks. Rituxan works by inhibiting B-cells in the immune system that are not working properly and thus causing inflammation.

Reclast
Reclast is a bisphosphonate used to treat osteoporosis. It is administered by IV over 20-30 minutes once a year. It works by slowing the breakdown of old bone. This allows the new bone growth to fill in the areas of bone loss.

Prolia
Prolia is a human monoclonal antibody that is used to treat osteoporosis. It is administered by subcutaneous injection once every 6 months. It works by slowing down the breakdown of old bone to allow for new bone grown to fill in the areas of bone loss.

Tysabri
Tysabri is an adhesion molecule inhibitor. It is used to treat patients with Multiple Sclerosis. It is administered by IV over one hour every month. It is believed that Tysabri works by preventing white blood cells from crossing the blood brain barrier and entering the brain tissue where it breaks down the myelin sheath that covers the axons.
